City of Šibenik

Šibenik was founded by Croats more than 1000 years ago and it’s the oldest native Croatian town on the eastern shores of the Adriatic. There are various interpretations of the origin of name Šibenik, most of them citing Juraj Šižgorić with the legend about the city surrounded by thick shrubbery (Croatian ”šibe”).

Šibenik is located in central Dalmatia, in a charming and vivid bay where the river Krka flows into the Adriatic Sea. River Krka is strikingly beautiful by itself, quite probably the most attractive karst river of Croatia. This ancient town of rich heritage is nested in a naturally well protected harbor, distinguished by unique hills on northern side of the bay and surrounded by fortresses of St. Mihovil, St. Ivan and fortification Šubićevac. Šibenik holds special significance in Croatian history since it’s the only larger coastal town not founded by Romans or Greeks but is of native Croatian origin.

Today, this jewel of Croatian heritage is home to 52.000 residents.
